about Vocal Lessons

Now in Portland, Maine!
Email for Appointment: info@kaleecoombs.com

About the lessons:
Lessons are for beginners. Beginners are those who have never sung before or who have taken just a few lessons in the past and are new to singing. The lessons will cover breathing, body alignment, learning songs, and expressing them. You will also learn to develop listening skills and will begin to read music as we go along. I’m classically trained in vocal performance and the techniques you learn are classical techniques. However, these are basic techniques that you can apply to any genre of music that you like. They will keep the voice healthy, strong, and close to a natural state. Singing is a process and a skill. Practicing will help you achieve your goals, but if you don’t want to practice and just have fun at the lesson, you can do that too. These lessons are designed to be informative and fun!
Most people feel a little shy or scared at first, but don’t worry! I will help you to feel comfortable and can help you to overcome that. I enjoy giving you support and make it a point to create a relaxed space in my studio.

Kalee’s motive:
I specialize in helping people to realize their own natural potential in music. In my opinion, everyone should be singing. I believe that it is our birthright. Our voice is the fingerprint of our soul. I was very shy growing up and let others do the talking for me. I didn’t feel worthy of expressing what was important to me. When I started to sing, all of that changed. I became much more confident and felt empowered. We live in a society where people don’t sing as much as they used to. Part of this is a fear of not meeting others’ expectations. This fear needs to be replaced by knowing ourselves better and appreciating our individual uniqueness and being around those who support us for that. We all need to express ourselves and feel good about it. I want more people to express their individual truth not only in singing, but in every day living.

Music is used for so many reasons, but the most amazing fact is that it can change molecular structure, heal the body, psyche, and spirit. Anyone can benefit from using the voice. This can happen in private creative pursuits or performing to others to strengthen self-esteem.

Finding your voice can be an empowering and enlightening experience. The lessons provide a comfortable and fun atmosphere for you to explore your voice. Discover the powerful and magical world of music by using the voice, instruments, and sounds. You’ll embark on an original journey: creating your own music. I believe that our voice is the fingerprint of our soul and an expression of this can open up a whole new world.

FAQ:

Do you teach someone who has never sung before?

Yes, Yes, Yes! Congrats for listening to your inner voice that’s telling you to “Sing!”

I’m out of town often with my job, are the hours flexible?

I try to be as flexible as possible, but I do have other commitments and students, so please bare in mind that once you schedule an appointment it’s easier for both of us if you keep it.

I’ve been told that I’m tone deaf; can I learn how to sing anyway?

Singing does more than just making your sound better to others. It promotes good physical, mental, and spiritual health especially if you feel called to do it.

People tell me that I shouldn’t sing; can you teach me anyway?

YES. Singing is your birthright and everyone who speaks should be singing. A few lessons with me, and you’ll feel the sweetest revenge ever. However, they might not feel good when you sing to them, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t feel good to yourself or someone else.

What should I bring to my lessons?

A notebook or journal, pencil, your issues around singing, & music that you wish to work on (optional).
What should I wear? Comfortable clothes. You won’t be doing anything too strenuous, but there will be some movement involved. Your body is your instrument and you need to get to know it.

Can you make me sound like Christine Aguilera?

She has a beautiful voice, but---Heck NO. I will do something better: I will help you to bring out the beautiful, strong, natural voice within you. This is one of the best gifts that you can give yourself!

Can you help me to win my karaoke contest, get on American Idol, or make me a star?

I don’t have any power to make you or break you. You are the one who does the work and I’m the facilitator. I give you important tools and you’ll have to determine for yourself where to take it and make it!

What can I expect at the first lesson?

Discussion of what you want from your voice, doing breathing and vocal exercises, and some body alignment work. We’ll probably pick out a song to start with and more will come later.

I don’t have enough money to come each week; can I still learn to sing?

Occasionally, I do barter or exchange services with my students. It depends on what I need and what kind of things you can do.

Can I learn to sing without practicing those yodeling tricks?

If you don’t like doing particular exercises, I won’t force you. There are many paths to one destination. Just communicate with me and we’ll come up with something else.

I’ve had a bad experience with a past teacher and I’m just afraid to try again.

Each teacher is different. You definitely should try again. Tell me your issue. If I can’t help you, I know of other teachers who probably can. Also, before choosing a new teacher, ask lots of questions. Examples of questions: What kind of background and training do you have? Do you have a degree? Do you have references?  What kind of music do you specialize in? Can you teach me what I want to learn? Do you have specific goals or wants from your students? What’s your motive for teaching? Why are you a teacher?

I’m so scared, but I want to try. Can you help?

Pushing through your fears is the best way to conquer them. Just talk to me about your concerns and we’ll work it out, even if its baby steps—No Worries! Please come over and you’ll see it’s not as scary as you think. You’ll be glad you did and it you open a whole new world yourself!
